Meadowlark Organics farm seeks Granary team member
Meadowlark Organics and Meadowlark Community Mill
3630 Ridgevue Road
Ridgeway, Wisconsin 53582
Inquiries and resumes should be sent to meadowlarkorganics@gmail.com
Meadowlark Organics Farm in Ridgeway, Wisconsin is seeking a team member to work in our seed cleaning facility, the Granary. With our current capacity the Granary supports our flour mill, several distillery customers, and cleans saved seed for our farm and neighbors. With more staff we hope to expand our custom cleaning business, thus supporting a larger network for farms to save seed and grow specialty varieties. This is just one of the many ways the Granary and this position can grow with the right person.
Similar to milling grain, seed cleaning is a manufacturing job and a craft. It is inherently repetitive but it is a critical job that requires attentive observation and adjustments. The job can be loud, physically challenging, solitary, and dusty. It is likewise creative, meaningful, flexible, and engaging.
All of the grain that goes to the mill for processing, distillers for distilling, and saved seed for replanting must go through the seed cleaner. We have machines that utilize both air and gravity to clean our grains, removing the weed seeds, light test weight grain, and other undesirable products from the grain. Every bushel of grain is slightly different and requires unique adjustments and each piece of equipment in the facility has its own “personality” that requires care and maintenance.
We are looking for someone who brings a positive attitude, a willingness to collaborate, a commitment to create the highest quality products possible, and a desire to be a part of strengthening our regional grain value chain.
Responsibilities include:
Independently operating Granary equipment, most commonly used; Crippen seed cleaner, Carter Day aspirator, and forklift
Maintaining accurate records, both paper and digital
Communicating openly and effectively with coworkers and managers
Following cleaning and maintenance procedures
Desired qualities:
Mechanically inclined or have the willingness to learn
Capable of lifting 50lb bags as well as execution of other physical tasks
Interest in taking part in infrastructure projects such as adding new equipment to the seed cleaning system
This is an hourly position (beginning at $20/hr or based on experience) and includes two week’s paid vacation for full time employees. Hours are generally M-F, 8:30-4:30, and we will consider applicants both part time and full time availability. We guarantee an annual 3% cost-of-living raise, and quarterly evaluations with potential for wage increases. Meadowlark Organics is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
Meadowlark Organics is a diversified organic farm in the Driftless region of southwest Wisconsin. We raise grain and forage crops on approximately 900 acres, and graze a growing herd of 35 breeding cows. We are focused heavily on direct-marketed grains for the local/regional food grade market: wheat primarily, but also corn, rye, spelt, oats, buckwheat, and dry edible beans. We process all of our own grain, as well as grain from other organic farms in our region. First by cleaning the grain in our seed cleaning facility, then often by milling flour and cornmeal in our sister business, Meadowlark Community Mill, also located on the farm.
